Tabletop flick football comes to the Xbox One by indy developer – Handy Games
What initially was released as a mobile game, Super Party Sports: Football has made its way to the Xbox One from Handy Games, makers of some of my favorite OUYA/Android releases like Guns ‘n’ Glory WW2! What kind of game would you expect from “Super Party Sports Football” anyway? Well, it turns out that this is more of a strategy title that borrows ideas from “Worms” and a bit from 2D soccer mobile/retro styled games. Having played it through a few Cups (1-5 to be exact) it seems more like a strategy war game rather than a soccer/football game at all.
Right from the get go you will chose your region or country that your Super Party Sports Footie team represents and move onward from level to level or game to game. The game boasts some very original platforms that make up the field of play that hardly resembles a football/soccer field at all. You’ll no doubt notice some very interesting ball/ricochet physics while kicking the ball from one team mate to the next which can be fun to play around with.
The goal of each board is to clear out (KILL!) all of the opposing team members and then shoot the flaming ball/weapon into their goal. The levels go from very easy 1-1 to quite difficult later on and can be somewhat challenging. I would imagine that this title seemed a bit more at home on the mobile/tablets that it was initially designed for and while the transition to a home console w/ controller isn’t totally alien, it does seem to be a bit tacked on with very little to offer. This would actually be a good purchase for Wii U owners if “Handy Games” ever announced a release for Nintendo’s home console. Another knock against this release is the lack of multiplayer features.
Coming in at a salty $3.99 on the Xbox One, you can’t really get too upset at yourself for picking this up as a stocking stuffer or casual game to waste some time with for the holidays, but this won’t change anyone’s mind on casual style games. It’s fun to pick up for a few minutes, but doesn’t do anything special to keep your attention for more than that. We rate it a 2 out of 5. Good for a casual time waster, but gamers looking for a bit more involving gameplay should look elsewhere.
