Croc’s Tale May Just Be Ready for an HD Revisit
Jez San, the founder of Argonaut Software Limited, has teased that an HD version of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos is in the works. This is quite a surprise, as for many years, Croc was simply a short-lived 3D platformer with oodles of charm that quickly vanished after only one sequel. The Tweet came as a reply to a post about Croc: Legend of the Gobbos’ history detailed in full in an article from Time Extension (which you can read here).
For those unaware, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos was a 3D platformer released in 1997 for Sega Saturn, PS1, and PC. Developed by Argonaut Software Limited and published by Fox Interactive, it featured the titular Croc on a mission to rescue these little balls of fuzz called Gobbos after Baron Dante decides it’s time to rule the world and capture its residents. Having been raised by these little fuzzy creatures, Croc takes on several worlds with unique biomes to defeat Baron Dante’s henchmen, rescue all his adorable little friends, and restore peace to the Gobbo Valley.
While the game itself borrowed many ideas from other platformers of the time (and wound up just a bit buried by said competition during that era), it meshed them together in a way that still gave Croc its unique feel and representation. I have a lot of personal vestment in this one, as it was one of the very early games of my youth that I remember playing on my uncle’s PS1, since that was all we had at that time, and many other platformers were getting me in the groove of gaming and hankering for more. Jez only stated that Croc HD had entered early development, which is very much open-ended as we’ve seen many an HD remake start like this and wind up abandoned down the road, but coming from the mouth of the Argonaut’s founder lends a bit more credence to this hopeful Croc’s tale.
I have news but it’s a little premature to announce it. a ‘Croc HD’ has started early development.

Here’s hoping this turns out well and might inspire some remasters of other long-lost classics like Ape Escape or Tomba. Do you have fond memories of Croc and are excited for an HD remake?
