2022 Still Has Some Heat Left
As we close out 2022 and winter arrives, some might think the heat would start to fade, but that’s not necessarily the case, at least not for games. December may not be the most packed month in history, but there are plenty of exciting games set to release over the next month to keep you warm. So curl up by the fire and check out these exciting titles.
The Callisto Protocol
Planned Release: December 2nd
Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC
Fans of Dead Space have an abundance of riches to look forward to in the next few months. Between The Callisto Protocol, which is a spiritual successor of sorts, and the remake coming in 2023, they’ll have plenty of otherworldly horrors to keep them busy. The Callisto Protocol is the more interesting project of the two, however, due to it being an original game. We’ll see if it can help close 2022 out with a bang.
Crisis Core – Final Fantasy 7 Reunion
Planned Release: December 13th
Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, PC
Crisis Core has always had its fans, but being stuck on the PSP has held it back from being fully enjoyed by everyone who might want to see the adventures of Zach Fair and how they set up Final Fantasy 7. Thankfully, that’s no longer going to be the case, as this remake is casting a wide net on most platforms. Seeming to fall somewhere between a remaster and a full remake, there’s enough new here that fans will definitely want to check it out. It will be interesting to see if there are any changes that tie into the core Final Fantasy remake as well.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns
Planned Release: December 2nd
Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (PS4, Xbox One, and Switch in the future)
While Marvel’s Midnight Suns has had a rough development cycle, with numerous delays leaving some fans nervous, it’s hard not to get excited about what looks to be Marvel XCOM, with some twists to give it an identity of its own. Seeing demonic versions of our favorite heroes and villains is also interesting, and I can’t wait to see who the still yet to be revealed crew of the DLC turn out to be. We’ll be bringing you more on this one as soon as we can.
Need for Speed Unbound
Planned Release: December 2nd
Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
It’s been far too long since we last saw a great Need for Speed game. We don’t yet know if Unbound will break that trend, but a truly cool new art style combined with handing the franchise back to the team at Criterion Games has us feeling hopeful for the first time in a lot of years. Now it just remains to be seen if they can recapture that old magic.
Sports Story
Planned Release: December
Platforms: Switch
What year is it? Announced shortly after 2017’s Golf Story, we’ve been waiting on this follow-up, which branches out into a variety of sports and activities for years. Normally we’d be nervous about a game without a specific release date this late in the year, but Sports Story’s date was announced just last month, so we’ll give it the benefit of the doubt. Not hopefully, we’ll finally be playing this long-awaited title soon.
Other Hot Titles To End The Year
While these five titles definitely have us sweating, they’re not the only interesting titles set to release in December. Choo-Choo Charles is a terrifying-looking horror game about fighting a train which is also a spider. It looks weird, but also intriguing and hits PC on December 9th. Dragon Quest Treasures meanwhile puts you in control of Erik and Mia from Dragon Quest IX as they search out buried treasure in what looks to be an interesting dungeon crawler. It also releases on December 9th. High on Life is another one that still is missing an exact release date, but the developers are out there talking about it enough that I’d certainly hope they’d say if a delay was still likely. We’ll find out soon. Romancing SaGa – Minstrel Song – Remastered is a remaster of a remake, so it may not be all that new, but it has a high learning curve, but some players will absolutely adore this one. Our review is out now, so check it out when it releases on December 1st. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, meanwhile, will finally get its next-gen update on December 14th. Is it worth revisiting the game for? That’s up to you, but we’ll certainly be giving it a look.
