Top 5 NES Game Power-Ups

5. Holy Water – Castlevania

Konami’s Castlevania is known for being extremely difficult and is probably the leading cause of many ulcers that us older gamers are suffering from today. Power-ups are in abundance in all Castlevania games, and rightfully so considering the difficulty (especially when it comes to the 8-bit trilogy). Whether it’s “wall meat” giving you that much needed health bar refill or the Holy Cross that magically falls from a whipped candle and wipes out all enemies on screen, players can feel a bit more courageous when traversing through Dracula’s castle, but I believe the power-up gamers can benefit from most is the Holy Water. Acting more like a bomb, the holy water bursts into a large flame when thrown at the feet of unholy enemies. Most of the time the ghouls will get caught in this flame and be unable to move for a set amount of time, giving Simon a few seconds to whip to his heart’s content. This works extremely well when fighting Frankenstein and also Death himself. Just keep tossing the old Holy Water at these tough bosses and it will render them helpless and unable to move.
