With the 2016 World Pokemon Video Game Championships starting early June, many players are starting up their teams and training to be number one. However, many people who only play Pokemon casually – or only battle with their friends – don’t know just how far some folks go to raise the perfect team.

As someone who has either been a competitor or a close follower of competitive Pokemon since the beginning of the 4th generation, I have put together a quick and helpful guide to assist those who want to try their hand at this surprisingly engaging series. I will do my best to explain the basics, though there will be helpful links along the way with some more of the technical aspects, as well as personal recommendations of people who play competitive Pokemon.
